5 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR BLADDER HAPPY
LIGHT BLADDER LEAKAGE OR INCONTINENCE CAN BE A TOUGH TOPIC TO DISCUSS AROUND THE TABLE BUT INCONTINENCE DOES NOT NEED TO BE A TABOO SUBJECT. ADDRESSING THE ELEPHANT IN THE (BATH)ROOM AND ABOUT HOW TO MANAGE URINARY INCONTINENCE IS IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN QUALITY OF LIFE. IF IT CAUSES DISCOMFORT AND OCCURS REGULARLY, IT’S A FORM OF LBL/ OR INCONTINENCE —IT COULD ALSO BE A SYMPTOM OF A MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM.
LBL SHOULD NOT LIMIT YOU JUMPING ON THE TRAMPOLINE OR RUNNING AFTER THE KIDS. CROSSING YOUR LEGS AND HOPING FOR NO LEAKAGE EVERY TIME YOU SNEEZE ISN’T THE NEW NORMAL. HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FEMALE INCONTINENCE.
There are three types of Incontinence
1. Stress incontinence – is the most common form of incontinence. Leaking occurs while pressure is placed on the bladder from activities ranging from coughing, sneezing or physical exercise.
2. Urinary urge incontinence – is when you need to go suddenly and a strong urge to urinate occurs
3. Mixed incontinence – is symptoms of stress and urinary urge incontinence. Urine leakage occurs when you sneeze, cough or laugh, and the sudden urge to urinate while you sleep or drink small amount of water.
Begin to look at your pelvic floor. The tiny muscles that connect from your pubic bone to your tailbone acting like a hammock, holding your pelvic organs and urine. Kegels are great way to build these muscles and create a strong pelvic floor to hold urine.
The first exercise is a long hold for strength. This can be done when you’re either sitting, standing, lying on your back with your knees and legs apart, or kneeling on your hands and knees. Tighten your pelvic floor muscles as strongly as possible and hold for 3-5 seconds. Repeat this up to 10 times and resting for a few seconds between each squeeze. Try to manage three sets a day. The second exercise is a quick squeeze for power. Squeeze and lift your pelvic floor muscles as strongly as possible. Do not hold on, squeeze and let go. Rest for a few seconds between each squeeze. Repeat 10-20 times, and do this exercise one to three times a day.
Often many factors contribute to incontinence. Being overweight weakens the pelvic floor muscles leading to stress incontinence. To take care of your health and eliminate leaks, eating healthy and exercising is vital. Diet rich in fiber, protects against constipation, which is another factor of stress incontinence.
Limiting the intake of fluid which has the following effects:
• When the outer part of the urethra and bladder becomes irritated, the consequences led to more urine leakage.
• Avoid drinking fluid 2 to 4 hours before going to bed to avoid night time wake ups and accidences occurring.
•Avoid drinks with caffeine and alcohol as these are both increase the passing of urine and irritate the bladder lining causing the production of more urine. If you make more urine, you stress your system. Limiting alcohol in general, as well as caffeine and carbonated beverages, can help. Staying hydrated and drinking water when you're thirsty is a choice healthy.
When medication is taken for heart, blood pressure, muscle
relaxants and sedatives, this can cause incontinence to become
worse. Excess fluids are removed from these areas by the
medication and leads to an increased fluid load to the bladder.
